Opening of Habitar España exhibition at the House of Architecture in Madrid

On April 24th, the new summer exhibition at the Casa de la Arquitectura in Madrid opened its doors. Under the theme: “Habitar España” (Living Spain) and curated by Mexican architect Fernanda Canales, the exhibition highlights seventy models of housing projects that have marked a milestone in Spain over the past fifty years. The studio of Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra has been selected to be part of the exhibition with its social housing project in Barriada de la Paz, Cádiz, completed in 1986. The project focuses on the configuration of public spaces, establishing a hierarchy between places and routes, squares, and pedestrian streets. The housing blocks, measuring 62 m and 116 m in length, are designed in an L-shape to form the corners of the buildings on both streets. The typology adopted is that of double-cruck houses, aiming to maximize the use of the floor plan by achieving the greatest possible width of the block. The larger block is conceived as a more complex organism, organized into two parallel sections connected by two glazed metal bridges, creating a pedestrian street between them that leads to one of the squares. The inner block—containing six floors of duplex apartments—accepts the subordinate role of the main building.
