The installation ‘House Like a Garden’, conceived as part of a project by Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra and developed in collaboration with Professor Edoardo Narne and the University of Padua, has been inaugurated at the historic Ca’ Lando complex in Padua (Italy). The project arose from an invitation extended to the Seville-based architect to reflect on Mediterranean housing through a small-scale experimental house. In response, Vázquez Consuegra drew up various proposals for a dwelling of approximately 37 m² organised around courtyards, from which a version centred on three open spaces was ultimately selected: the entrance courtyard, the courtyard-garden and the lemon tree courtyard. The project was subsequently developed and constructed in timber by students of the Building Engineering and Architecture course at the University of Padua. The structure explores some recurring themes in the work of Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra: the sequence of intermediate spaces, the importance of the courtyard as a structuring element of Mediterranean housing, the relationship between interior and exterior, and the ability of architecture to incorporate nature into the domestic space. Access is via a courtyard partially covered by a pergola, conceived as a transitory space between the city and the house, a mediating environment that gives the whole complex its identity. The installation forms part of an exhibition dedicated to the residential architecture of Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra, which brings together a selection of single-family residences and apartment building projects, alongside a wide range of the architect’s drawings and travel sketchbooks. The exhibition can be visited at Ca’ Lando until 15 July. Located in the heart of Padua, the historic Ca’ Lando complex currently hosts cultural, academic and research activities linked to the University of Padua, serving as a meeting point for heritage, contemporary architecture and educational experimentation.

The University of Padua, as part of its academic program dedicated to the study of the great masters of contemporary architecture, has published a monograph focusing on the residential work of Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra’s studio. This monograph has been included as number 4 in the Architectural Research series and in the Ca’Lando journals. The volume offers a review of the studio’s major residential projects, spanning from the beginning of its professional activity to its most recent proposals. The texts were written by Edoardo Narne and Yuuichi Iketami. As a final touch, the publication presents a unique residential design exercise: the design of an experimental house for two people in a surface area of 37 square meters. This exercise will culminate in the physical realization of the project, which will soon be built at full scale (1:1).

The project undertaken by Vázquez Consuegra in Melfi involves the restoration and adaptation of the former San Bartolomé convent (16th century) to transform it into the MIA Museum, an acronym for Museum of Innovations and Arts. The approach combines preservation and architectural modernization. The project begins with a rigorous analysis of the existing structure, identifying its spatial, structural, and urban values as the foundation for the new design. Over the past few months, the main structural work and consolidation operations have been completed, along with the restoration of significant original elements. Simultaneously, the construction of new architectural elements is progressing, reorganizing the program and improving accessibility, circulation, and overall functionality. The project incorporates contemporary construction and technological solutions that ensure the building’s adaptation to current requirements, adding a new layer of contemporary architecture to the existing structure. The materials and systems employed respond to criteria of precision, restraint, and continuity, reinforcing the dialogue between memory and contemporaneity. As construction progresses, the project begins to define its final spatial configuration more clearly, consolidating an architecture that, through restraint and rigor, seeks to revitalize the building and reinforce its role within the urban context of Melfi.
